The Modern Bungalow
Less is More!
The brief was a simple one. Design a modern, minimal, family oriented, budget friendly home, with an emphasis on incorporating out door spaces.
The final iteration of the design resulted in an open plan layout where the public spaces, both interior and exterior became the central hub of attraction and entertainment. The cultural Caribbean gathering point, the verandah, is replaced with a hedged in courtyard as it is more functional, less costly to construct and serves the same purpose. The courtyard becomes an extension of the interior public spaces allowing the relatively small public spaces to open up almost completely without sacrificing privacy. The more private bedroom / office spaces although having direct access to the public spaces are buffered by service spaces giving them an added measure of sound insulation and privacy. This layout ultimately resulted in decreased dedicated circulation spaces, allowing for a compact family oriented 2-3 bedroom home of only 1, 280 sqft.
